They are listed as an endangered species, which is because of poaching and habitat loss due to activities such as illegal mining. Their home range size, i.e., area, used by the gorillas during a year, varies and depends upon factors such as availability of food. Another population is found in Uganda’s Bwindi National Park.įorests, where these gorillas live, are often cloudy, misty, and cold. Vegetation is extremely dense at the bottom of these volcanoes. When the gorilla gets older, the entire fur becomes grayish, much like the gray hair of elderly people. The fur is mainly black, but adult males have a silvery "saddle" on their back. The face, hands, feet and breast are bald. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with an endangered remnant population in Gir Forest National Park in India, having disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.
