I personally love the Mindthief, but it definitely has a steeper learning curve. The consensus on the Reddit is the Cragheart is a ton of fun to play, and they get to do some pretty cool battlefield manipulation and true damage that bypasses Shields, all while having an 11 Card Hand Size and a big health pool. They aren’t the flashiest, but they have some crowd control from Provoking Roar and a number of sources of push that can really help set up better AOE opportunities for your two Allies, shove slow-moving or stationary enemies away, or with Balanced Measure set up a non-loss Attack 6 each Rest Cycle (Move 4 + Boots). I personally adore the Brute and found they play well with all the other starters. If you don’t think everyone will be able to coordinate well, or you don’t think you’ll be able to get them to bring their cards that will synergize with your mercenary, I recommend changing to another character. In a vacuum the Contraption isn’t that great, but if it gives you cover and flanking in Melee its utility is greatly increased. It has a decent health pool early on and will focus as if it had a melee attack to run headlong into danger and provide you the bonus for an adjacent ally. Your Tinkerer should consider summoning their Harmless Contraption as well as coordinating being in melee range of your chosen victim. There are a number of picks that they can take that lean into close quarters combat and initiative weaving, such as their Frost Nova. The Spellweaver is not primarily a Melee Class, but DoublePlusUngood has a good guide for making the Scoundrel/Spellweaver duo work together really well. As such, you’re going to want to coordinate initiative weaving with your Spellweaver and Tinkerer to ask them to help out. Scoundrel really wants an ally in melee to fully shine. And there's one tank that can do absurdly high single-target damage that makes even the Scoundrel jealous. Just don't assume Gloomhaven tanks only do one thing: There are two tanks at least that are highly competent at tanking, healing, and damage-dealing. And even when it is possible, sometimes avoiding damage means wasting turns, which may also cause you to exhaust. Yes, the best strategy in Gloomhaven is damage avoidance, but that's not always possible. But having someone capable of taking a lot of hits for you really allows the squishies to operate more effectively. You can certainly do without one, but it takes a lot more skill. It's even poined out that building a party of all squishies leads to issues. It may not fit the meta definition of a tank that some video games have built up, but in its purest form, tanking is very much a part of Gloomhaven. I don't know why so many keep repeating the mantra that "tanking isn't a thing in Gloomhaven". Second, with that party comp, all of your characters are rather squishy, which can lead to issues Mindthief is a very solid choice and can be quite fun for most, but you do need 2 warnings: first, mindthief has a rather high learning curve so may take a while to get used to. Also just a side note, but please don't think it is a tank in general, tanking isn't a thing in gloomhaven.Ĭragheart is a bit of a jack of all trades, so is a good choice if you like options, but doesn't really excel at anything, especially at low levels. Scoundrel has the strongest single target damage of all the starting classes, but relies on having another melee character in the party, so really wouldn't recommend using her with spellweaver and tinkerer.īrute is probably the most bland of all the starting classes, but gets the job done (so if you are looking for a flashy "fun" character probably better to skip). Not sure what your definition of a fun class is (in my mind, how well a class can do something is more important than how many things it can do), but I'll give my opinion of those 4 classes
